hello all thanks for viewing my post,i have a problem i lent a freind of mine my ubcd996t-1st mistake!! he is a truck driver,2nd mistake he decided to plug it into 24v lighter and it has fried something ,3rd mistake me not telling him to not plug it into 24v,so is there going to be major damage inside?he did realise after it did not turn on so he claims it was in for about 5seconds then it was dissconnected,does anyone know the repairs that may be needed i live in sydney so local tech would be ok but open to offers/suggestions,i dont have the working knowledge for these type of repairs.thanks,73.

If it is anything like some of the earlier models, then I would expect some very expensive repairs, or even a total write-off. Incidently, the rear panel near the Power socket is marked "DC 13.8 Volts"

Well, you could try the Uniden Service Centre at 345 Princes Highway, Rockdale NSW, or
Andrews Communications, in Bathurst Street, Greystanes NSW.

If the inline fuse blew, there might be a glimmer of hope. Some radios have a special diode wired across the power input lead (a zener diode). If the input voltage is too high, say 18 volts or more, the diode conducts and acts like a short circuit - this blows the fuse and disconnects power immediately (hopefully saving the radio from further damage).
I don't have a schematic diagram of the 996T, so I'm only speculating.
