I wouldn't mind going for a look but I am on holidays a week after so I don't think the boss would like me taking another day off.

Re: New Hornets
These "new" super hornets are only a stop gap between the f111 and the new fighter that is delayed (can't remember if it is the jsf or another type)
I am not sure how long they will be in australia however no doubt there will be a little display out there when they "pitch" into the amb circuit when they arrive

Re: New Hornets
I know RAAF-POL put a stop to people stoping at the back gate. Years ago there would be 60+cars watching and waiting for new aircraft to arrive at amberley.

Re: New Hornets
Friday 26th March
The RAAF's first five new Super Hornets are heading down under touching down at their new home at RAAF Amberley in Queensland today.
Defence Minister John Faulkner will officially welcome the planes; Australia's first new frontline combat aircraft to enter service since the RAAF's older Hornet's arrived in the mid-1980s.
The RAAF will mark their arrival with an escort of F-111 strike bombers as they fly over the Gold Coast and Brisbane on the way to Amberley.
The F-111s are set to retire at the end of this year with the remaining Super Hornets arriving progressively this year and next

Re: New Hornets
Just heard an interview with a RAAF officer on Sea FM that the Super Hornets with F111 escort will begin their Gold Coast flyover from Tweed at about 1245hrs Qld time today then continue to head north.
Anyone hazard a guess at what chat frequency they might be using?

That fly-by was pretty damn cool! First time in 37 years I've seen that many flying in formation!

Re: New Hornets
I heard what sounded like Cutlass 1 on the Brisbane ATC channels Seems to me like the RAAF like sword names for special callsigns. I know during riverfire I have heard the F1-11s using SABRE.
At my workplace at Corinda a number of the staff went out on the roof of our building to take a look. It was kinda neat...but would have been nice it was louder. I think it will be better on the news tonight.

Re: New Hornets
I am sure the the RAAF are not getting Raptors. They are getting the JSF. The JSF is the F-35. The raptor is the F-22. They look similar from the outside thouPhoenix Rising wrote:Orangepeel - that new fighter would be the Raptors?....orangepeel wrote:These "new" super hornets are only a stop gap between the f111 and the new fighter that is delayed (can't remember if it is the jsf or another type)

Anyway - the "rhino" will be a nice stop gap measure until the JSF is certified.

The Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18F Super Hornet will give Australia an upgraded air combat capability for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions until the full introduction into service of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). Twenty-four Super Hornets will replace the F-111s at Nos 1 and 6 Squadrons at RAAF Base Amberley from 2010.

Re: New Hornets
They still don't have anything as good as an F-111 and what it can deliver over the distance. A pile of glow bugs to replace the wasps.
