Rurals

Post by Vkfour »

I have listened a lot over the years and never really paid any attention to the rural firefighters. Can, sorry, that should be will, any one describe the callsign system for me? Obviously they use the name of their brigade and the followed by a number. All I have heard is 41 and 51 numbers. Do these have any meaning and are there others?

there really isnt any different radio procedures for us (Except the appliance naming), so you'll hear all the same radio messages (only more bushfire specific) , ie - blacking out, action case 1, case 4, HRB (Hazard Reduction Burn), etc. we dont use BA and we dont really do RCR or house fires (internal attack). one main difference you will hear is some rurals arent very confident on the radio as we are only volunteers, and many only see a handful of fires in a year. heard one guy the other literally shouting his message into the speaker, quite funny coz you can just imagine the firecom officer cringing as this guy shouts his message into their headphones.

and once you know what appliance you are getting coming to your incident as an incident controller you can use that to knowledge to know what sort if capabilities those appliances have with the standard appliances that rural fire brigades run. Although with the new appliances to be released this year it will make it slightly harder to work it out via the call signs.
This is a run down Neil gallant put on face book about the new appliances
Neil Gallant
"I mentioned a week ago that I would publish the Water Capacity of the various RFSQ supplied standard appliances. They are: Nissan Patrol - 500l (Light, no longer produced), Ford Ranger Duel Cab - 500l (new Light for 13-14), Iveco - 800l (new Light for 13-14 - when GVM plated for car licence), Iveco - 1300l (new Light for 13-14 - when GVM plated for truck licence), Isuzu Single Cab - 1800l (Medium), Isuzu Duel Cab 1500l (Medium). When an existing appliance reaches 20 years old, the Brigade can choose to keep the appliance provided it maintains a current Safety Certificate, or they can choose to have it replaced with one of the above. RFSQ will supply the replacement at NO COST to the brigade. RFSQ then takes the old appliance and disposes of it as per Government Asset Disposal Procedures. This reduces both financial burden and red tape for the Brigade. The actual choice of new appliance should be discussed between the Brigade and the RFSQ Area Director. RFSQ plans to produce 10 Light and 30 Medium appliances in the 13-14 FY. This is twice as many as last year."
