help with Id ing this antenna

Post by christopher »

not sure what brand of antenna this is

it has a screw connection as you can see on the base

not sure if its ( VHF / UHF ) and not sure what MHZ

the cord from the base screws in to a PL259 connector

Cellular is above 800mhz and digital . Not the best type to use as a uhf CB/scanner antenna at 400-500mhz

Doesn't matter if it's digital or not. It'll probably work okay as a scanner antenna, and if it doesn't, he got it from the tip, so nothing lost.

Never said it won't work , it just won't be optimal as it's tuned for 800+MHZ

I believe I said, "It'll probably work okay as a scanner antenna, and if it doesn't, he got it from the tip, so nothing lost". In any case, the loading system is specifically to match the antenna to the transmitter. There is, and this comes from about 45 years experience, a lot more leeway with receiving antennas. Just have a look at the antennas on scanners and tell me they are optimised. Yes, if you want to listen to a specific, or narrow band of frequencies, a specific antenna is the way to go, but scanners are broad banded, and many go well beyond 800 MHz. Again, it'll PROBABLY work okay, but if it doesn't, it cost him nothing. Experimentation is the essence of amateur and experimental radio. If you don't have a go, you'll never know.
