The officer is in a critical condition after being found badly bashed at a Kings Cross bus shelter on her way to work today, The Daily Telegraph reported.
Outside St Vincent's Hospital this morning, uniformed police officers hugged each other, with one male uniformed officer holding a baby and another woman with a stroller in tears.
A female officer hugged the woman with the stroller, saying "she's going to be okay" before the group left.
Police patrolling Craigend St found the woman unconscious in a bus shelter shortly before 7am today.
It is understood the woman, an experienced police officer, was unarmed and not in uniform when she was viciously assaulted.
She was attacked between where her car was parked and Kings Cross police station.
She had been robbed of her personal belongings.
The woman is about to undergo surgery at St Vincents Hospital for what is described as a serious brain injury.
She is in an induced coma.
Police are hunting the attacker, with patrols combing nearby streets for evidence.
The woman had suffered severe head injuries and was taken to St Vincents Hospital where her life hangs in the balance.
A crime scene has been set up in Craigend St and Central Metropolitan Region Assistant Commissioner Catherine Burn will be making a public appeal for information later today.

Re: Police Woman Brutally Bashed (Mother)
POLICE have arrested a suspect in the vicious bashing of a NSW policewoman.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the man was arrested at Dapto railway station last night.
He is currently walking police through the crime scene on Craigend St, Darlinghurst, where the 34-year-old off-duty officer was bashed and robbed in the early hours of Wednesday while on her way to work at Kings Cross police station.
The man, who was tall and slim and dressed in white track pants, a white long-sleeved shirt and a blue-green T-shirt, had a mullet haircut and a tattoo on his neck.
Police drove him to the crime scene shortly before 10am and spent some time at a small park off Craigend St, near the bus stop where the policewoman was found bleeding but conscious on Wednesday morning.
He was then led down Oswald Lane to where the policewoman's shirt had been found dumped, after her bag was stolen.
Shortly before 11am they placed the man in a white Tarago van which took him to a nearby police station to be charged.
