Uniden UBC340CRS squelch fault

Post by Scannersplitterguy »

One of my UBC340CRS's has developed a fault. The squelch pot does nothing. ie: the squelch stays open continuously.
I've checked the pot (100K) and it is ok. The dc on it varies between 2.6 - 3.2 volts.
I can't find a schematic anywhere for this scanner, so will try Uniden next week.
Has anyone had this fault before or have a schematic?

Just a follow-up on the UBC340CRS.
I bought a service manual from Uniden and determined the fault is on the LCD display PCB.
Uniden don't / won't supply a complete PCB. They asked me to send the scanner to them.
I enquired what their minimum charge/hourly rate is - a not too unreasonable $88.
Thing is, I can buy a brand new unit on eBay for $130 with free postage.

I have just fixed the exact problem today, I don't know why but the pot gives all of the above mentioned specs but have found that after spraying (servisol wd lube)into the base of pot and working it at the same time fixed the problem, to me! this indicates carbon buildup on contact points, should have replaced the whole damn thing but, I'm too cheap to do that, LOL.

Footnote: my repair methods have been quoted as (unorthodox), But "hey" if it works? why not.

Follow up, years later....

I've got two Uniden scanners that suffered the same problem, it is very intermittent and quite hard to diagnose.
Recently, I replaced the squelch pot in both scanners and the problem is fixed.
When measuring the resistance of the pot (while removed from the pcb), there is leakage between the wiper and both ends of the carbon track. Really odd behaviour, you have to see it to believe it!
I used off-the-shelf pots from Jaycar, they required some cutting to shorten the shaft, and the knobs don't line up properly to keep the pointer in the right position, but they work and are probably much cheaper than Uniden parts.

Hey that's great to hear.

Mine is doing the same and as you said, intermittent.

Might have to try that as well. As they make a great bedside scanner, and I have always used it for that for years.

Thanks
