New in here !

Post by Mervo44 »

Hi, I'm new in here. My main scanning activity is listening to Aircraft band frequencies. At the moment I have an Uniden Ez133XLT scanner, but I don't like it. Very difficult to enter frequencies, Also there's something wrong because although I can receive aircraft, I cant pick up the ground stations. I will sell it for $40. Instead I have sent off on Ebay for I Uniden Bearcat BC75XLT scanner which will be computer programmable. This will do the trick !

Welcome Mervo44, there is a lot of information on this site if you take the time to go looking for it. There's probably nothing wrong with your existing scanner though, but I will say that new gear is always fun. Airband frequencies are VHF and are known as line of sight. Without going into a lot of details, the reason you can hear the aircraft and not the ground is because the aircraft is within, "sight", where as the ground station isn't

Thanks for that response Vkfour. I'm only about 7Km from Adelaide airport, so I deduce the fat I can't pick up ATC is a fault of my settings. Regards.

Flightradar24.com is immensely helpful to get a good handle what is coming and going.
(But doesnt show all traffic especially military related)

Some frequencies are configured to be heard only close to the airport eg SMC, ACD so dont be too suprised if you cant hear them

Thank you for your response, Vkfour. I'm aware of these frequencies but will save them and add them to my new scanner.
It should arrive around Friday 21st. Can't wait !

I didn't send you these frequencies, blacktown did. In any case, you need to look at a lot of different things. Your antenna, is it indoor, mobile, portable or outdoor? The antenna that comes with handheld devices can't handle the huge spread they are required to and don't work spectacularly well on some frequencies. The terrain around you, what else is in that area? VHF and UHF is funny old stuff and moving just a short distance can make a difference. At one house we lived at, if I sat in the middle of a 3 seater lounge, I could get the local 2 metre repeater with full quieting, both transmit and receive, but moving to either end, I could barely hear it. I really do hope that your new scanner works, and works well at that, but basically, there are a lot of things that can impact on your listening and you may need to experiment to get the best out of it. No, you SHOULD experiment to get the most out of it.

My new Scanner, the Bearcat BC125AT is absolute magic. I was able to program all the frequencies in using the Butel Arc125 software.
